Speaking (of) Mother Tongues
“Everytime I think I’ve forgotten,
I think I have lost the mother tongue,
it blossoms out of my mouth.”
~ Search for My Tongue, Sujata Bhatt
As part of the post year-end exam lessons, IP2 classes were exposed to the different cultural issues in Singapore and actively engaged in the discussion and sharing of their own mother tongue languages and cultures. Tasked with writing a poem or short story on their mother tongues, many wrote from their hearts, sharing their praise and affirmation or, conversely, their struggles and conflicts with them. As you read the poems featured here, may they bring to mind your own experiences with your mother tongue language and culture, be they positive or negative, taking comfort and inspiration from these heartfelt sharings as you navigate your way through them.
